3/16    The futton does not make for a good bed. Luckily it will only be for 3 nights.  We went to the outdoor market with Maria this morning.  I have never seen such wonderful looking produce. It was all very artfully arranged and so fresh. It was hard not to over buy. We got fresh strawberries, raspberries, bananas, tomatoes, cucumbers, raisins, olives and nectarines that are called banana nectarines. We saw kiwis, 1 kilo for 300 pesos (about $.60). This is where a majority of our fruit comes from.
We then bought ouf bus ticket out of here to La Serena. We leave Monday night at 11:15 pm and arrive at 6am. Kind of yucky, but we don't lose a day and save on a room for the night. It is only $23 each.
We then took the metromto Valparasio, the next town over. This is where the Mutiny on the Bounty took refuge. We rode one ofnthe woodennelevatore upmtonthe more artsy neighborhood. We had a typical Chilean lunch, pisco, reineta (a local fish), rice, a seafood empanada, a glass of wine and ice cream for dessert. Delicious!  We then split up. T and B went to the harbor port to watch the big ships, G and I walked around the artsy area, shopped and went to see the neighborhood where all the fantastic murals are painted on the buildings. Incredible. We headed back on the metro and stopped to see the Rapa Nui head. They have one original one here outside the museum. It was brought here in the early 1900s from Easter Island, so more people could appreciate them. They are carved out of lava rock and are pretty cool. I pictured them larger though. I will have to read up on how big the ohers are.
Tonight, we may go to a place where they play tango music. We need to get some more specifics from Maria. I really like her. She is chilean and so full of energy. She is funny and a great "tour guide".
